Nothing Before Jesus
Luke 10:38-42
1. Anyone Willing to Sit at the Feet of Jesus May be His Disciple. (Luke 10:38-39, Galatians 3:27-29, Matthew 4:18-22)
Galatians 3:27-29, For those of you who were baptized into Christ have been clothed with Christ. There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.
Matthew 4:18-22, As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. “Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, preparing their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
2. The Cares of the World Will Always be There, But Don’t Let Them Distract You from Jesus. (Luke 10:40a, Matthew 8:21-22, Mark 4:18-19, Genesis 15:6)
Matthew 8:21-22, “Lord,” another of his disciples said, “first let me go bury my father.” But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Philippians 3:18-20, For I have often told you, and now say again with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction; their god is their stomach; their glory is in their shame. They are focused on earthly things, but our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Mark 4:18-19, Others are like seed sown among thorns; these are the ones who hear the word, but the worries of this age, the deceitfulness, of wealth, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Genesis 15:6, Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
3. Distraction Causes Division, But Jesus Praises Discipleship. (Luke 10:40b-42, Galatians 3:1-3, Acts 4:32-33, Revelation 2:10, 2 Corinthians 4:16)
Galatians 3:1-3, You foolish Galatians! Who has cast a spell on you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning by the Spirit, are you now finishing by the flesh?
Acts 4:32-33, Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common. With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.
Revelation 2:10, Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.
2 Corinthians 4:16, Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.
