The Blinding Effects of Hatred
Matthew 26:57-68
1. In Hatred:
a. We Can’t See Clearly. (Matthew 26:59, 1 John 2:11)
1 John 2:11, But the one who hates his brother or sister is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he’s going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
b. We Can’t Obey God’s Law Perfectly. (Matthew 26:65)
c. We Can’t Trust Tradition. (Matthew 26:67-68, Isaiah 50:6)
Isaiah 50:6, I gave my back to those who beat me, and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard. I did not hide my face from scorn and spitting.
d. We Can’t Honor God. (Matthew 26:66, 1 John 3:10)
1 John 3:10, This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother or sister.
2. In Love and Obedience to the Father:
a. Jesus Honors Tradition While Fulfilling Scripture. (Matthew 26:64, 67, Psalm 110:1, Daniel 7:13-14a, Isaiah 53:7)
Psalm 110:1, This is the declaration of the Lord to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Daniel 7:13-14a, I continued watching in the night visions, and suddenly one like a son of man was coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him. He was given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom; so that those of every people, nation, and language should serve him.
Isaiah 53:7, He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth.
b. Jesus Honors God. (John 17:1-5)
John 17:1-5, Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you gave him authority over all flesh, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ. I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.
