God is Not For Sale
Matthew 27:1-10
1. No Matter How You Frame it, Sin is Against God. (Matthew 27:1-2, Romans 3:23, Genesis 39:9)
Romans 3:23, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Genesis 39:9, No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do this immense evil, and how could I sin against God?
2. No Matter How Sincere You Are, Sin Separates You from God.
a. Crying Doesn’t Help. (Matthew 26:75, Proverbs 3:5)
Matthew 26:75, and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Proverbs 3:5, Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding
b. Dying Doesn’t Help. (Matthew 27:4-5, Ephesians 2:8-9, 2 Corinthians 3:5)
Ephesians 2:8-9, For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast.
2 Corinthians 3:5, It is not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God.
c. Denying Doesn’t Help. (Matthew 27:4b, 6-7, 1 John 1:8-10)
1 John 1:8-10, If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
3. Trust in the ONE Who Fulfills! (Matthew 27:6-10, Hebrews 1:2-3, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Galatians 2:21)
Hebrews 1:2-3, In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe, through him. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
1 Corinthians 15:3-4, For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
Galatians 2:21, I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
