Matthew 27:11-26
1. No Matter How Things Appear or Feel, God is Faithful to Fulfill and Save! (Matthew 27:11-14, Leviticus 4:32, 35b, John 1:29)
Leviticus 4:32, 35b, Or if the offering that he brings as a sin offering is a lamb…In this way the priest will make atonement on his behalf for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven.
John 1:29, The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
2. No Matter How We Try to Deny or Justify our Sin, We Know the Truth. (Matthew 27:15-18, 26, Romans 1:18-20, Jeremiah 2:22)
Romans 1:18-20, For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
Pilate understood his guilt and wrongdoing. 5 different times he tried to make the people happy and free Jesus. He sent him to Herod (Luke), suggested that the paschal amnesty be applied to him (Matthew), proposed a compromise with a scourging (Luke), tried to turn the case back to Jewish authorities (John), protested before pronouncing sentence (John), and here washes his hands (Matthew). (Concept from D.A. Carson, Matthew 27:24)
Jeremiah 2:22, Even if you wash with lye and use a great amount of bleach, the stain of your iniquity is still in front of me. This is the Lord God’s declaration.
3. No Matter How Hard We Try, We Will Sin When We Prioritize “Standing” Over God and His Truth. (Matthew 27:19-23, Colossians 3:23-24, Romans 1:32, 2 Timothy 4:3)
Colossians 3:23-34, Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.
Romans 1:32, Although they know God’s just sentence—that those who practice such things deserve to die,—they not only do them, but even applaud, others who practice them.
2 Timothy 4:3, For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.
4. No Matter How Happy the World is with You, Judgment is Certain and Predictable for All Who Sin Against God. (Matthew 27:24-25, Matthew 27:4, Romans 14:11-12, Proverbs 27:12)
Matthew 27:4, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” [Judas] said. “What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!”
Romans 14:11-12, For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will give praise to God. So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
Proverbs 27:12, A sensible person sees danger and takes cover; the inexperienced keep going and are punished.
