Why We Do the Things We Do
1 Peter 2:11-17
1. If the Goal is to Glorify God:
a. Abstain from Sin. (Vs. 11)
b. Act Honorably. (Vs. 12a)
c. Anticipate Scrutiny. (Vs. 12b, Heb 13:15-16)
i. Hebrews 13:15-16, “Therefore, through him let us continually offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.”
2. For God:
a. Subject Yourself to Authority. (Vs. 13, Rom 13:1-2)
i. Romans 13:1-2, “Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.”
b. Silence Ignorance. (Vs. 15-16, Dan 6:4)
i. Daniel 6:4, “The administrators and satraps, therefore, kept trying to find a charge against Daniel regarding the kingdom. But they could find no charge or corruption, for he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption was found in him.”
c. Serve with Love and Submission. (Vs. 17, Heb 12:28-29)
i. Hebrews 12:28-29, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”
