“The Sum Total” Pt. 1
3 John 9-15
From Pride: (Vs 9)
1. Comes a Rejection of the Righteous. (Vs. 9b, Titus 1:14)
a. Titus 1:13-14, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.”
2. Comes a Dismissal of Disciples. (Vs. 10a, 1 Cor 11:18-19)
a. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19, “For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. Indeed, it is necessary that there be factions among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you.”
3. Come a Corrupting of Church. (Vs. 10b, John 9:38-39)
a. John 9:38-39, “John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.” “Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle in my name who can soon afterward speak evil of me.”
4. Comes a Breaking of the Body. (Vs. 10c, 1 Cor 12:14-15, Luke 22:24-26)
a. 1 Corinthians 12:14-15, “Indeed, the body is not one part but many. If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body.”
b. Luke 22:24-26, “Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. But he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called ‘Benefactors.’ It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving.”
