The Greatest Fear
Joshua 7-8
1. Sin Leads to:
a. God’s Anger. (Vs. 1, Isa 59:2, Num 32:13, Deut 5:9-10)
i. Isaiah 59:2, “But your iniquities are separating you from your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not listen.”
ii. Numbers 32:13, “The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD’s sight was gone.”
iii. Deuteronomy 5:9-10, “Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.”
b. Presumption. (Vs. 2-4a, Matt 3:9-10)
i. Matthew 3:9-10, “And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
c. “Shocking” Defeat. (Vs. 4b-5, Gal 6:3)
i. Galatians 6:3, “For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”
d. Desperation and Blame. (Vs. 6-9, Prov 19:3)
i. Proverbs 19:3, “A person’s own foolishness leads him astray, yet his heart rages against the LORD.”
e. Switching Sides. (Vs. 10-12, Psa 5:4-5)
i. Psalm 5:4-5, “For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil cannot dwell with you. The boastful cannot stand in your sight; you hate all evildoers.”
