Build Upon a Rock Not a Block
1. The Mission of the Messiah Was Sacrificial. (Matthew 16:21; Matthew 9:15, Matthew 10:38, Matthew 12:40, Matthew 26:28; Revelation 1:5b)
Matthew 9:15, Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests be sad while the groom is with them? The time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
Matthew 10:38, And whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
Matthew 12:40, For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish, three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.
Matthew 26:28, For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Revelation 1:5b, To him who loves us and has set us free from our sins by his blood…
2. The Mission of the Messiah Was Heaven-Ordained. (Matthew 16:23)
a. Jesus is Lord; therefore, He is in Charge (and We Aren’t). (Matthew 16:16, 22, 23a)
Matthew 16:16, Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 4:8-9, Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”
3. The Mission of the Messiah Was Built upon the Rock Not the Block. (Matthew 16:23b)
