A Really Blended Family
Matthew 1:18-25
1. Jesus: The Son of Mary. (Vs. 21-23a; Luke 2:51-52, Heb 4:15; Luke 1:29-31)
a. Luke 2:51-52, “Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.”
b. Hebrews 4:15, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.”
2. Jesus: The Son of Promise (and Joseph…kind of). (Vs. 16, 20; Mark 6:3, Matt 21:9)
a. Mark 6:3, “Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t his sisters here with us?” So they were offended by him.”
b. Matthew 21:9, “Then the crowds who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
3. Jesus: The Son of God! (Vs. 21, 23; Luke 1:35, 22:70; Matt 26:63-64, John 10:9-10)
a. Luke 1:35, “The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
b. Luke 22:70, “They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.””
c. Matthew 26:63b-64, “The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” “You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.””
d. John 10:9-10, “I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.”
